How to Generate an Instagram Post Online: A Step-by-Step Guide
Build a realistic Instagram post mockup in your browser — profile, carousel, caption, likes and comments — then download it in HD. No sign-up, nothing published.

A mockup of an Instagram post is one of those things that sounds trivial until you try to make one by hand. Screenshot a real post and you have borrowed someone’s face and words. Build it in a design tool and you spend an afternoon getting the heart icon wrong. What you usually want is a picture of a post that never existed, accurate enough that nobody argues with it, in about four minutes.
That is what the Instagram post generator is for. It runs in your browser, it needs no account, and nothing you make is published anywhere. This walks through it properly, including the parts people get wrong.
Start from a template, not from blank
The template strip above the editor has seven starting points — Announcement, Quote, Product, Carousel, Giveaway, Event, and Blank. They are not decoration. Each one arrives with a caption of roughly the right length, a sensible like-to-comment ratio and comments that read like comments, which are the three things that take longest to get right from scratch.
Pick the one closest to your idea and change everything about it. Starting blank is a fine choice if you know exactly what you want, but most people do not, and a blank post with 0 likes is a harder thing to react to than a filled one.
Set the account
Three fields decide whether the post reads as real before anyone looks at the picture.
- Username. Instagram handles are almost always lowercase, usually with a dot or an underscore.
maria.lensreads right.Maria_Lensreads like a placeholder. - Profile picture. Upload one, or leave the default. Either is fine; an obviously stock headshot is the thing to avoid.
- Verified badge. Off by default, and that is the right default. Most accounts are not verified, and a blue tick on an ordinary-looking account is the first detail an alert reader will challenge.
There is also a location line under the username and a story ring around the avatar. Both are switches in the Show on the post column. Turn off anything your example does not need — a post with every element enabled looks like a feature list rather than a post.
Add the pictures
One image, or up to ten as a carousel, which is Instagram’s own limit. Add a second and the page dots and the counter appear on their own; you do not have to switch anything on.
Then choose the shape, which matters more than most people expect:
- 4:5 portrait takes the most room in a real feed. It is what most accounts post, and it is the right default unless you have a reason.
- 1:1 square is the classic. Use it when the lesson is about the square, or when your photo is square anyway.
- 1.91:1 landscape is the least common and the most likely to read as an advert, which is occasionally exactly what you want.
Your images are resized in the browser to fit the frame. The originals stay on your device.
Write the caption
Up to 2,200 characters, with hashtags and @mentions coloured the way the app colours them, and the more fold appearing where Instagram puts it.
The first line is the one that matters. It is the only part most people read before the fold, so put the point there. Three hashtags and a line break is a caption nobody reads.
Set the numbers
Likes, the comment count and the posted time are all free text, so 7 and 146,934 are both valid and neither is checked.
Keep them in proportion. Roughly one comment per fifty to a hundred likes looks ordinary. Equal numbers look bought, and a post with 900 likes and 900 comments is the detail that turns a classroom discussion into an argument about the mockup instead of about the content.
Add comments that sound like comments
Up to twenty, each with its own avatar, username, text and like count.
Real Instagram comments are short, lowercase and a bit careless. Full sentences with correct punctuation are the single clearest sign that a thread was written for a slide. Three good ones beat twelve generic ones.
Edit on the preview
Every dashed area on the preview is editable in place. Tap the username on the post itself and its field opens; tap a comment and you are editing that comment. On a phone the editor splits — preview on top, controls below — and follows whichever field you are in.
Auto-save is on by default. As a guest your drafts stay in that browser; with an account they follow you between devices.
Download it
Tick the responsible-use box, choose a resolution and press Generate.
- 2× is fine on a screen.
- 3× is the one to use in a slide deck.
- 4× is sharp enough for a printed handout. A square post exports about 1,760 pixels square at 4× — that is the whole mockup, card and all, not the photo inside it.
You get a PNG, and a PDF button beside it if you need one. Both carry a hidden origin mark, and the verification tool reads it back from the file as it was downloaded — resizing the image or re-saving it as a JPEG destroys it. The reason this is safer than a screenshot of somebody’s real post does not rest on the mark, though: there is no real account in it to begin with.
What people actually use this for
- Media-literacy lessons. The same photo posted by a verified account and an unverified one, so a class can work out how much the badge is really worth.
- Online-safety work. A comment thread that turns, built safely, with no real pupil’s account involved.
- Advertising disclosure. A sponsored post with and without its paid-partnership label — the fastest way to show what the label is for.
- Campaign pitches. Proposed posts in context, with plausible engagement, before anything is published.
- Interface design. A realistic placeholder feed inside a product mockup, instead of borrowing a real account’s photos.
Where the line is
Label a mockup as a mockup wherever it goes. Teaching, training, design, documentation and clearly-labelled parody are all fine. Passing one off as a real post to deceive somebody is not, and it breaks our terms. The responsible use page sets out what we ask and what we do about it.
Common questions
Is it free?
Yes, and there is no sign-up. Every feature, the verified badge and HD downloads included, works as a guest.
How many photos can a carousel hold?
Ten, which is Instagram’s own maximum.
Can I make it look like dark mode?
Yes — a Light/Dark switch under Style, using Instagram’s own dark surface and text colours.
Does anything get posted to Instagram?
No. Nothing you build here is ever sent to Instagram or to any other platform. You edit in your browser, and the finished image comes back to you as a file.
Is my mockup uploaded anywhere?
Nothing is sent while you work. Downloading sends the finished image to us once so it can be watermarked and signed, and we keep a record of it. The privacy policy sets out exactly what that record holds.
What about stories and DMs?

your tool was amazing…now you upgraded its interface and its terrible. Let me explain. When you export the “fake facebook status” using your Image Saver, the quality is terrible. What I was doing was just ZOOMING the screen from my browser, making the image as big as possible and SCREENSHOTTED the screen…that way the size of the image was huge, HD and I could edit and refine it on photoshop. Now that you changed the interface and addedd those Delete/Edit icons I cannot screenshot it anymore…and your image saver is still poor quality. I know it’s an harsh message but really, it was amazing, i was able to create high quality facebook status/comments and messages…and now i cant anymore
